Appointed
to design-manufacture
When Astrium required someone to help design and make a range of sophisticated
mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE) for the Beagle 2 Mars Lander
project, they turned to a long established and reliable name, EPS Logistics
Technology Limited, Sittingbourne, Kent. |

As one of the founding partners of
this major space exploration project, Astrium was specifically tasked
with assembling both the structure model and flight model of the Lander
and final assembly and testing of the Probe.
To successfully complete these, they required
new, innovative MGSE ideas and designs. Their brief was that the MGSE
would be required for use both within the Beagle 2 Assembly, Integration
and Test programme; and subsequently at the Mars Express Spacecraft level
for integration to the spacecraft.
EPS LT was called in as a trusted supplier,
who would recognise and respond to the demands of the project.

The
type of equipment EPS LT is now working on includes: an Integration/Turnover
Stand, to turn over the Lander and the Probe for assembly and integration;
Lander and Probe Transport Containers, to move items to test sites and the
final launch site in Kazakhstan; and the Lander Deployment/Solar Panel Work
Table and Probe Final Assembly Stand.
Beagle 2 is a prestigious project. It has called upon top people in their
field who are dependable and who can deliver to tough deadlines. EPS LT
have a lot of experience designing and making MGSE and has supplied Astrium
(formerly Matra Marconi Space) reliably over many years.
EPS LT's Project Manager, Tim Spice confirmed "The project is drawing on
all our technical expertise and our design, analysis and manufacturing capabilities
but we are enjoying the challenge. We are certainly very proud to be part
of the Beagle 2 team".
